How to Find the Right Hair Color For You

Coloring your hair is very popular these days, no longer is it just to cover grey, people use it as a statement of their own individuality.. And it's no longer just natural browns and black's people are going for they are experimenting with all sorts of colors, pink blues and purples.
There are many ways in which your can color your hair, some permanent and some temporary. One of the most common ways especially for young people is peroxide which bleaches or removes all the color from your hair. There are also permanent hair coloring products that dye your hair another colour (not blond). These work by using an oxidising agent (hydrogen peroxide) and an alkalizing ingredient (ammonia) to lift the cuticle of the hair shaft and allow the color to penetrate beneath the surface. This is why hair can often feel dry after using a permanent dyes.
Temporary hair colouring solutions last around 6 weeks depending on how many times you wash your hair. They are a lot gentler on your hair as they do not lift the hair cuticle, and penetrate the shaft; instead they sit on the top layer of the hair.
There are a number of different hair coloring products available on the market, so shop around. It is also pertinent to conduct a small patch test on your skin to make sure you are not allergic to any of the chemicals in the dye. How do you choose the best color for you?
Choosing the Right Hair color
When you go into a drugstore you often see little sample colors next to each box of dye, unfortunately buying that color doesn't mean that your hair will come out that exact same color as the sample. The dyes interact with your unique color and shades to produce a color unique to you. Therefore before colouring your whole head it is important to do a small strand test.
Regardless of which brand you buy the packaging will urge you to test a small sample of your hair first. Here is how it works:
• Mix a small amount of color together in a bowl.
• Select a small amount of hair to color, and apply the dye to the hair.. You can clip the test strand or wrap it to ensure it does not dye the other hair around it. I usually snip a piece of hair off and dye it,
• Follow the directions on the packet in terms of timing, then rinse.
• Make sure you look at the hair in various different lights both inside and outside to ensure that you like it.
Caring for Color Treated Hair
Because of the potential damage dyes can do to your hair you need to take extra care of it. Here are some tips to ensure your hair remains healthy and vibrant,
• Find a shampoo especially designed for color treated hair (Revlon, L'oreal, and Clairol are all good brands)
• Protect your hair from sun exposure as much as you can to protect it from fading and drying.
• Condition your hair regularly with a specially formulated conditioner.
• Use a wide tooth comb on your hair when it is wet.
If you are worried about coloring your hair permanently start with a semi-permanent color first.
Alternatively there are a number of the temporary, wash-out highlights you can spray on or paint on with mascara-like wands. If you are not happy with a permanent color you can add another dye over the top. Remember your natural hair color doesn't change so it is only until your hair grows out.
